Literaturhaus Vienna hosted an “Evening for ruth weiss” to celebrate the poet’s 95th birthday. Thomas Antonic showed an excerpt of One More Step West Is the Sea: ruth weiss and talked to weiss’ publisher Christa Stippinger (Edition Exil). After that ruth weiss’ friend, chansonnier and actress Lucy McEvil performed songs with lyrics by ruth weiss, accompanied on the piano by Martin Kratochwil.

Alte Schmiede in Vienna hosted a tribute to ruth weiss, organized by Thomas Antonic, featuring poets Ann Cotten, Lilly Jäckl, and Thomas Raab, hosted by Alexandra Millner. The entire event can be watched here:

Screening of One More Step West Is the Sea at the Luggage Store Gallery at 1007 Market St. in San Francisco, with poets Jessica Loos and Jeff Kaliss reading their own and ruth weiss’ poetry, accompanied by ruth weiss’ musicians Rent Romus and Doug Lynner.

One More Step West Is the Sea has been selected as the opening film of the Los Angeles International Poetry Film Festival. The screening took place at Beyond Baroque in Venice Beach. To introduce the evening, Bay Area poet K.R. Morisson read ruth weiss’s poetry accompanied by bassist Christian Camacho. A Q&A with the director Thomas Antonic and co-producer Robert Dassanowsky moderated by S.A. Griffin followed after the screening.

One More Step West Is the Sea was in the official selection and selected as Finalist of the Central Florida Film Festival that happened from January 20 to 22 at Mount Dora outside Orlando.

DECEMBER 8, 2022

Vienna movie theater premiere of One More Step West Is the Sea at Breitenseer Lichtspiele, the oldest still running cinema of the city, on December 8 at 7:00pm. Sparkling wine (Sekt) reception and a short performance by musician Karli Braun with ruth weiss’ voice before the film, Q&A with film director Thomas Antonic and premiere party after the film. The theater will show the film also on December 13 at 6pm and on December 20 at 11:30. For more information go to the website of the cinema.

One More Step West Is the Sea is in the official selection of FIDBA – International Documentary Film Festival of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The festival is happening from November 30 to December 5, 2022.

One More Step West Is the Sea is in the official selection of the 56th International Film Festival in Hof, Germany (Internationale Hofer Filmtage). Wim Wenders once said of the festival that “Hof” means “Home of films”. Screenings will be on Friday, October 28, at 7:30pm, at Central Kino; Saturday, October 29, 5:45pm at Central Kino, and Sunday, October 30, 3pm, at Scala cinema. The production team is proud to present the trailer of One More Step West Is the Sea, a film about the legendary Beat poet ruth weiss (name always lowercase), Nazi refugee in the 1930s, innovator of Jazz & Poetry in Chicago in the late 1940s, major female Beat Generation partaker in San Francisco in the 1950s, filmmaker in the 1960s, environmental activist at the Mendocino Coast in the 1980s, still performing at an advanced age in the 2010s. The film by director Thomas Antonic has recently been accepted by the first film festival and will premiere in late spring. Details will follow soon on this website and social media.
